t it all fixed up. >> reporter: it will take them hours to fix it. you can see the fire hydrant that was knocked over when a water main broke open at 2:15 this morning and water was spewing several feet in the area at about 1500 gallons a minute on alisio for an hour and a half. luckily, the drainage is in good working order around here, no real flooding to report. the fire department shut the water off and it's still off for 13 homes as crews try to fix this mess. >> usually the hydrant breaks off but pipe is attached to it so it might be old pipe that broke. >> reporter: the damage to the asphalt on alisio drive will need to be repaired once they next it underneath. the water department is

scheduled to be here at 6:30 to fix it. is this a concern aging pipes around the area? they say not really. it just seemed as if this was this one's time to go. anne makovec, cbs 5. thank you for that. >> we better keep that umbrella handy just in case because we are going to see more showers today. volunteer good. you're on top of the weather today. >> we have been listening to you for the last hour. >> for the first time. keep the umbrella handy. we have clouds outside. the main area of low pressure drop into the south beginning to sweep up in our direction. you can see that in the south bay picking up more rainfall in that direction. so down toward gilroy, morgan hill, into the santa cruz mountains, monterey bay, you're seeing the rain picking up but this could sweep back in across the bay area throughout the day today so not a big storm system but some occasional showers are a possibility. you can see on the satellite image that low dropping to the south with all that moisture rotating around and moving back into the bay area. so we are going to keep it

unsettled for today. it's muggy out there now. we are getting some reports of fog. the temperatures running in the 40s and 50s. scattered showers highs in the 50s and 60s, much colder weather coming our way and more showers too. we'll talk about that in a moment. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> here's a live look at the san mateo bridge. still 14 minutes out of hayward towards the high-rise and foster city on 92. so problem-free across the san mateo bridge. let's go driving. we have alan brooks with mobile5 and everything looks good eastbound 24 so he is heading know lafayette now. we saw no delay by the way in the commute direction approaching the caldecott tunnel a little earlier. so thanks, alan, for that live look at current road conditions once again heading towards walnut creek. elsewhere a live look at more bridges. golden gate bridge traffic so far flowing nicely out of marin county towards san francisco.

the nimitz 880 in oakland, they wrapped up roadwork. so all roads are open in hayward and downtown. surveillance video captured a man trying to kidnap a 13- year-old girl in san jose. the teenager fought hard and broke free. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at the san jose police department with more on this investigation. cate. >> reporter: good morning. officers at the san jose police department are hoping this new surveillance video can lead to the arrest of the suspect. >> we slowed it down to get a closer look. first a victim wearing white gets snatched from behind. dragged into a dark driveway. police say the 13-year-old screamed and fought back. a few seconds later she broke free and ran down the street. police released this sketch of the suspect. this happened last friday morning on 33rd and saint james. officers commended the bill for

putting up the fight. >> it was a frightening situation and she fought back and escaped the perpetrator. >> officers say the suspect wore blue dickie's work pants with brown shoes stained with white paint. >> anyone with any information is asked to contact the officers here at the san jose police department. reporting live in san jose cate caugiran, cbs 5. brentwood union school district is under fire for standing behind an abusive teacher. dina holder was convicted of kicking an autistic child two years ago after the incident was reported the district moved her to another school. earlier this month the district settled with the victim's family for nearly a million dollars and removed holder from her teaching position. last night parents lashed out at the board for allowing holder to teach. >> i don't care what's written down in a procedures manual or anything like that.

i think that somebody should have took a stand and said we need to get her away from kids. >> district officials say it's difficult to fire tenured teachers such as holder. part of the settlement holder is on paid administrative leave and will resign at the end of this school year since holder was only charge with a misdemeanor she can still teach if another district wants to hire her. some other bay area headlines on this thursday. two people are in police custody after a fire broke out in a vacant victorian. this is on harrison street. the two were rescued from the roof of the burning home just after 5:00. according to the owner, the vacant property is known to house squatters. it took firefighters about three hours to put out the blaze. a man trying to cross a freeway on-ramp was hit and killed in oakland last night. an elderly man was trying to walk across the 17th street ramp to westbound 980 and was hit by three cars. one driver stopped, the other two did not. governor jerry brown will deliver the state of the state today.

he will lay out his policy agenda for the state which he says is on the rebounded. but he is expected to tell state lawmakers that an improving budget situation does not mean they can go on a spending spree. dianne feinstein will introduce an assault weapons ban in washington, d.c. today. the california democratic bill also bans high capacity ammunition clips in the wake of the sandy hook school shootings. her bill is also cosponsored by both of connecticut's senators. >> newtown changed things. >> we believe in our right to defend ourselves and our families with semi-automatic firearms technology. >> vice president joe biden continues his search for ways to curb gun violence. he is heading to virginia tomorrow. he will hold a rally to promote gun control and will hold online google forum chats to discuss the issue. san mateo county will hold a gun buy-back event this

saturday at the fairgrounds on delaware street. the county will offer $100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles. if you turn in an assault weapon you could earn up to $200. in recent months several bay area cities have held gun buy- back programs. this is oakland's successful event last december. new this morning, british officials warning of an imminent threat against westerners in libya and telling all uk nationals to get out of benghazi immediately. meanwhile secretary of state hillary clinton got emotional yesterday when asked about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate there. >> i put my arms around the mothers and fathers the sisters and brothers sons and daughters and the wives left alone to raise their children. >> the senate and house foreign relations committee grilled her for more than five hours yesterday. the secretary says she is focused on trying to fix what went wrong. >> and secretary clinton's replacement will begin his

nomination process today. senator kerry will go before the senate foreign relations committee in the first step to become the next secretary of state. to prepare for his new role, the senator will have to sell off many of his personal investments to avoid conflicts of interest. president obama is expected to announce his first female nomination of mary jo white as ahead of the securities and exchange commission. apple's days of double- digit growth are over. apple shares tanked by more than $50 in after-hours trading after apple said growth in the current quarter is going to be only 7%. in the latest quarter apple earned $13 billion the same as a year ago. sales of iphones, ipads and mac computers were below expectations. mayor lee is working up a very specific game plan as we count down to the super bowl. >> considering the mayhem that followed the giants world series win the mayor says his

eye is on safety. still the twin victories of a giants world series win and 49ers super bowl trip has san francisco mayor ed lien joying the best of times. but it's not the same for gavin if you some who will be remembered as the mayor who lost the 49ers new stadium to santa clara. >> it's bittersweet because you want to see them succeed and you want the energy and pride that comes from their victory. i'm disappointed as a fifth generation san franciscan that they are going to santa clara. mayor lee is hartened by the fact that the 49ers will keep the san francisco name even after they make that move down south. he also says that on the day of the super bowl, he will try to keep the city safe during potential celebrations. >> santa clara 49ers? >> no, san francisco 49ers. the time is 6:11. the fashion police are out. the 49er that got fined $10,000 because he was wearing the wrong socks or they were pushed

next one. 101 through san jose. headlights northbound. so far speeds are still moving at the limit. to our maps now, other live traffic cameras word of a few more problems on the road including this accident in sunnyvale southbound 101 approaching the ma tilt da exit. two lanes are blocked so just a heads up. we are not seeing any major slowing yet on either direction of 101 but again that could change because chp is just now heading to the scene. so this is where we are starting to see some slowing. westbound 4 through antioch and the westbound 580 commute slow through 205 towards the dublin interchange. for more on our wet forecast, here's lawrence. >> kind of nice to see the showers make a return yesterday. we could see a few more showers out there today beginning to see a little bit more of that on our high-def doppler radar. scattered showers toward morgan hill in gilroy and santa cruz mountains towards san jose. we'll see that on and off

throughout the day. so if you are heading out grab the umbrella. mostly cloudy skies, we have some fog, temperatures fairly mild mainly in the 50s. i think this afternoon 50s and 60s with more scattered showers. looks like things staying unsettled now as finally that big ridge of high pressure is headed eastward. low pressure is dropping in just off the coastline sweeping in all those clouds back up in our direction so the moisture is coming up out of the south. a little bit of a muggy feel to it and maybe some occasional showers outside. computer models making its way through the bay area not a huge storm system just occasional showers sweeping on through. continuing into the evening hours, as well. so you get the idea, had clouds and rain that's about it. possible delays at sfo with all the clouds and showers the temperatures mainly in the 50s very cold though traveling across the country 27 degrees and snow in chicago could cause problems there. 28 and cold into new york.

79 in houston, 70 degrees in denver. highs in the low 50s and 60s and rain and then toward the next few days, we are going to have clouds in the skies but we are sure to dry out. cold storm and showers toward sunday. how about that? >> cold showers. >> doesn't sound nice. >> not this early in the morning. other class i take. >> reporter: 18 sixth through eighth graders rock out twice a week, three drummers, guitars it keyboard, horn section and electric violin, all getting a crash course in rock and roll. the class is now in its sixth year and it's one of a kind from the grateful dead to kiss. these kids are learning it all. >> i actually have a waiting list for next year. so that's -- i don't have to motivate them too much. they're here. >> reporter: do you see yourself as a female rocker someday? >> yes, i do. ♪ [ music ]♪ >> reporter: mike carter a horn player with a big heart teaches the class that provides many of the instruments. the los gatos rec department and parents kick in too. no grades, no credit, this is all about fun. is it hard to rock and roll at 7:30 a.m.? >> no. >> reporter: snow. >> no. you can rock and roll all day and night. ♪ [ music ]♪ >> reporter: once a month the fisher rock band cuts a cd and they also perform at the school

and around the community. it's a big hit. the only drawback? the noise. >> oh, i was saying we appreciate great music but i think i have relocated the fisher rock band about three times until i found the perfect room. ♪ [ music ]♪ >> reporter: so for fine-tuning tomorrow's rockers, the raymond j. fisher school is this week's "cool school"! >> they are amazing. mr. carter is not so bad, either. >> he can blow that horn pretty well. he also plays guitar. a lot of the instruments he provides for the kids. so it's cool. and there's more. one of the parents that helps out is actually the former bass player for prince. he sits in with the kids so how cool is that? and a violinist from the silicon valley symphony pitches in, one of the teachers. they love it. they are great mentors. >> such a young age. >> they get up early, no credit, just learning to have fun. you can tell us about your "cool school" too. submit your nomination at our

i'm michelle griego. >> nothing like a little smoke on the water at this hour. ♪ [ music ]♪ >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:31. we have an update on some developing news in the north bay. crews are rushing to restore water for a marin county neighborhood. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is live where a water main break is having an impact on the commute. anne. >> reporter: crews have a lot of work to do. they are preparing to start digging in this intersection here behind me at alisio drive in greenbrae. you can see that fire hydrant there. that was knocked over when a water main underneath it broke open at around 2:15 a.m. and check out this video. water spewing several feet into the air at a rate of about 1500 gallons a minute for an hour and a half. luckily the draining an around here is in good working order. no real flooding to report. the fire department shut the water off and it is still off for 13 homes in this neighborhood as crews try to fix the mess. >> water district will come out and dig out all this asphalt,

go underneath the ground and fix the pipe and then put the asphalt back. >> reporter: check the damage to the asphalt on alisio drive. traffic has been rerouted around this intersection. it's not a very busy intersection. but the main problem for those 13 homes right now being without water waking up without showers not able to make coffee, it's going to be probably after noon before their water is restored. right now live in greenbrae, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. you want some water, we have plenty of it. the rain coming down in a big way. this was in san jose last night in parts of the bay area may still see some showers today. we had a few coming in this morning on our commute. >> i know. so we have rain and then fog could also be an issue? >> a little fog in the valleys. santa rosa visibility down to half mile but the rest of the bay area a lot of clouds and maybe more showers on the way. the moisture is sweeping up from the south. high-def doppler radar tracking some of that rainfall right now

most of the bay area dry. but you can see a little southward we are taking you in for a closer look and you can see that rainfall spreading into the santa cruz mountains along 101, gilroy and morgan hill. the watsonville area. and this is going to be sweeping back into the bay area throughout the day today. so it looks like things are going to stay unsettled outside. you see the low dropping southward but the rotation around that low is bringing that moisture in our direction. keep that umbrella handy. you may need that from time to time. numbers in the 40s and 50s. it will be muggy this afternoon with showers and highs only in the 50s and low 60s. more cold showers are on the way. we'll talk about that coming up. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> it is getting busier now outside. we have a few more incidents coming in including a new accident westbound 80 in richmond approaching the central avenue exit so we are seeing brake lights. they are working to clear it

now. in richmond things look better towards ashby. this is a live look through berkeley right now. speeds improve down towards the macarthur maze. drive time about 20 minutes or so from the carquinez bridge to the maze. also, another problem spot in sunnyvale, southbound 101 by mathilda avenue, we have an accident there, two lanes are blocked. again, they are working to clear it. some minor slowing approaching the scene. and look at this. we have brake lights now already for your silicon valley ride. westbound 237 from 880 towards zanker road. and westbound 580 super busy this morning. no incidents reported but very sluggish right now through livermore. drive time nearly a half hour between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. right now, police are searching for the man who tried to kidnap a san jose teen on the way to school. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is live from san jose with more. >> reporter: good morning.

that surveillance video was taken from a neighbor who caught the struggle. now, we slowed it down so you can get a closer look. you can see right there that victim, she is in white as you can see as she is walking past that car, you see her get snatched from behind and dragged into a dark driveway. police say the 13-year-old fought and screamed. seconds later she broke free from the suspect and ran away. here's a sketch of the suspect. police say this happened early friday morning on 33rd and saint james street. turns out the girl screamed caught the attention of a nearby neighbor like manuel alvez. >> it wouldn't be pretty. i would have do what i had to do and then turn him to the authorities. >> reporter: alvez says he got into the car to look for the suspect but missed him by a minute. police say the suspect was wearing blue dickie's work pants with brown shoes with white paint stains on them and if you have any information, please contact the san jose police department. reporting live in san jose,

cate caugiran, cbs 5. all right, cate, thank you. some bay area headlines. oakland police have detained two people in connection with a fire at a vacant victorian house on harrison street. the two were rescued from the roof of the burning house just after 5 p.m. yesterday. according to the owner the vacant property is known to house squatters. it took firefighters three hours to put the fire out. a $26 million security system is approved for the new eastern span of the bay bridge. the system will include 175 video, infrared and thermal imaging cameras. the equipment will be atop the bridge and also under it. it will include a monitoring room. the system was originally expected to cost about $8 million. later this morning, we are going to get the governor's take on how things are going in the state of california. jerry brown will deliver his state of the state address to the legislature. the governor is expected to tell his fellow democrats who control the senate and the assembly that an improving

budget situation doesn't mean they can go on a spending spree. menlo park has given facebook a thumbs-up to build a second campus near its headquarters. the social network wants to develop a west campus where tyco electronics operated on the bay front expressway. in exchange, facebook will give the city more than a million dollars over the next 10 years. that does not include the nearly $200,000 facebook will pay in property taxes. california's senator dianne feinstein wants to reinstate a ban on certain firearmses across the country. she will introduce a bill to ban assault weapons and high capacity ammunition clips. it's co-sponsored by connecticut's democrat in the wake of the sandy hook elementary shooting. it's opposed by the nra. vice president joe biden will continue to discuss gun violence today at 10:45 our time. tough questions for secretary of state hillary clinton on the attack on the

u.s. consulate in benghazi. >> this went on for hours yesterday. clinton got angry when a republican senator asked her about allegedly misleading the public. >> with all due respect, the fact is, we had four dead americans. was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided they would go kill some americans? what difference at this point does it make! it is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, senator. [ banging desk ] >> the senate and house foreign relations committee grilled clinton for more than 5 hours yesterday. the secretary of state said she is focused on trying to fix what went wrong. meantime, this morning, the uk is warning of an imminent threat to westerners in benghazi and is asking all brits to leave the city. military women could soon be moving to the front lines. later today defense secretary leon panetta is expected to make the official announcement removing the military's ban on

women serving in combat. military chiefs must decide whether women should be excluded from any of the more demanding and deadly positions such as navy seals or the army's delta force. north korea is once again issuing warnings some of them directed at the u.s. the regime says it is prepared to conduct a nuclear test and carry out more long range rocket launches. the latest threat follows the united nations security council's tightened sanctions against north korea. that was in response to a launch last month. coming up, she says she will watch him in the super bowl on tv. the birth mother of 49er quarterback colin kaepernick sharing her story. >> the runner-up to the heisman trophy at the center of the girlfriend hoax when te'o found how the she didn't exist. >> the market opened about 10 minutes ago. let's check the early numbers on this thursday. right now, a bit of a mixed bag a little up a little down. we'll crunch the numbers with kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks when we come back.

actually started two days ago... bringing out about a thir crews are back on the scene of a major warehouse fire in chicago's south side. it actually started two days ago bringing about a third of the city's fire department to help. firefighters had it under control yesterday but the warehouse began burning again this morning. the building is filled with old timber that rekindled the flames this morning. right now crews are gaining an upper hand on the fire. take a look at this. it got so cold in new york overnight that the fountain in bryant park froze. arctic air sent temperatures plummetting. it's 12 degrees in new york right now and the coldest temperatures are expected later today and some victims of superstorm sandy are trying to

get by with propane heaters because the utilities haven't been restored yet. >> craze is i. >> up in minnesota, i hear it's so cold there, you know, it's like 30 below. >> it's dangerous. your skin freezes like that outside. wind chills minus 50 degrees up there. isn't it nice to be in the bay area? >> yeah. >> 52 when i got up this morning. >> and we're worried about a few showers. a lot of clouds and we had that nice rainfall yesterday. we're not done with it yet. the lows that brought showers sagging to the south a lot of the moisture streaming up from the south around that system so looks like a chance of a few more showers in our forecast for today. cloudy skies right now, we are seeing a couple of patches of fog in the valleys. visibilities down to a half mile in santa rosa. this afternoon, a chance of some scattered showers really a lot of that especially to the south as this low is dropping in that direction but the rotation around that is bringing some of those clouds and the rainfall back into the bay area. so an unsettled weather pattern.

its own high expectations. investors getting used to blockbuster quarters, one quarter after another, didn't get that in the recent quarter even though apple sold a record number of iphones and ipads. still missed expectations on those levels. even though its profit came in at more than $13 billion, revenue over $54 billion, its shares are hammered this morning. right now they are down about 11% wipings out about $50 billion in market cap for apple weighing on the tech sector today. better news for netflix which turned a surprising profit in the recent quarter adding more than 2 million u.s. subscribers in the process. revenue was up to around $945 million and investors are cheering netflix. its shares are skyrocketing up almost 43% at more than $147. weekly jobless claims falling by another 5,000 to
